About the Book

Harvard professor of symbology Robert Langdon awakens in an Italian hospital, disoriented and with no recollection of the past thirty-six hours, including the origin of a macabre object hidden in his belongings. As Langdon attempts to get his bearings, an assassin named Vayentha arrives at the hospital and shoots his attending doctor in an attempt to break into his room, but Langdon escapes with the help of a young British doctor named Sienna Brooks. Vayentha is later revealed to be an agent of the Consortium, an independent international organization that provides special operations services to the highest bidder, regardless of that bidder's intentions.

Drawn into a harrowing world centered on one of history's most enduring and mysterious literary masterpieces, Dante's Inferno, Langdon battles a chilling adversary and grapples with an ingenious riddle that pulls him into a landscape of classic art, secret passageways, and futuristic science. The trail leads through Florence to Dante's death mask, which bears a cryptic verse pointing toward Venice. Pursued by Consortium agents, Langdon learns from WHO director Elizabeth Sinskey that geneticist Bertrand Zobrist has created a virus designed to render much of humanity infertile, believing overpopulation dooms civilization. The hunt ultimately ends in the Basilica Cistern beneath Istanbul, where the virus has already dissolved into the water supply.

Throughout the novel, Dan Brown interweaves modern-day locales with historical sites, creating a striking juxtaposition between the contemporary world and the classical realm of Dante's Inferno, and the story explores weighty themes of overpopulation, bioterrorism, and genetic engineering.

Why Choose This Book?

  • Brown's highest-stakes novel to date: A thriller built around the fate of humanity itself, not just a single institution or secret.
  • A vivid European backdrop: Set largely across Florence, Venice, and Istanbul, showcasing some of the world's most renowned and beautiful cities.
  • Rooted in a literary classic: Draws directly on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, weaving Renaissance art and poetry into a modern conspiracy.
  • A chart-topping bestseller: Debuted at #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list for hardcover fiction and combined print & e-book fiction for its first eight weeks.
  • Adapted for the big screen: Made into a 2016 feature film directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon.
