About the Book

Introduction to Spectroscopy is the textbook that has set the unrivaled standard in spectroscopy education for more than thirty years, offering students a comprehensive, systematic introduction to spectra and the theoretical concepts behind the major spectroscopic methods used in organic chemistry. Written by Donald L. Pavia along with co-authors Gary M. Lampman, George S. Kriz, and James R. Vyvyan, the book works equally well as the primary text for an upper-level spectroscopy course or as a companion text alongside a standard organic chemistry course.

The book provides thorough, methodical coverage of the four major techniques used to determine molecular structure: infrared (IR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV) spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry, walking students from foundational theory through to genuine spectral interpretation skill. Recent editions include a modernized treatment of one-dimensional NMR spectroscopy, updated coverage of biological molecules in mass spectrometry, and modern multidimensional NMR techniques including DEPT, COSY, and HETCOR, alongside updated spectra and detailed appendices covering mass spectral fragmentation patterns and isotopic abundance ratios. Known among generations of chemistry students simply as "the spectroscopy bible," the book pairs dense theoretical grounding with extensive practice spectra and problems, helping students build real, lasting confidence in interpreting IR, NMR, and mass spectra.

Why Choose This Book?

  • The benchmark spectroscopy textbook for over 30 years: Widely regarded as the standard reference for learning organic spectroscopy.
  • Comprehensive coverage of all major techniques: In-depth treatment of NMR, IR, UV, and mass spectrometry in one text.
  • Includes modern, up-to-date methods: Covers advanced techniques like DEPT, COSY, and HETCOR alongside classical approaches.
  • Extensive practice material: Filled with real spectra and end-of-chapter problems to build genuine interpretation skills.
  • Trusted by generations of students: A long-standing favorite that students return to well beyond their coursework.

About the Author: Donald L. Pavia

Donald L. Pavia earned his BS in chemistry from Reed College and his PhD in organic chemistry from Yale University. He joined the faculty at Western Washington University in 1970 and now holds the rank of Professor Emeritus, having received the Outstanding Teaching Award for the College of Arts and Sciences during his career. In addition to Introduction to Spectroscopy, Pavia is a co-author of several widely used organic chemistry laboratory textbooks, including Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques: A Microscale Approach.
