About the Book

"The story of my life is the story of my stories," writes Susan Orlean in Joyride, an extraordinary, era-defining memoir from one of the greatest practitioners of narrative nonfiction working today. Joyride is a magic carpet ride through Orlean's life and career, where every day is an opportunity for discovery and every moment holds the potential for wonder — a masterful account of finding her creative calling and purpose that invites readers to approach life with the same curiosity and irrepressible sense of delight that has defined her writing for decades.

Prompted in part by the twenty-fifth anniversary of her bestseller The Orchid Thief, Orlean takes stock of everything she's seen and learned since landing her first writing job in 1978 at an alt-weekly newspaper in Portland, Oregon, with little more than pluck and a single clip. She recalls the on-the-fly education that taught her to chase her own curiosity and develop the distinctive voice that would eventually bring her fame, bringing readers behind the scenes of some of her most celebrated long-form pieces — including her profile of an ordinary ten-year-old boy from New Jersey for Esquire, her feature on surfer girls in Hawaii for Outside Women that inspired the film Blue Crush, and her New Yorker profile of an Ashanti king working as a taxi driver on Long Island. Woven throughout is a genuine, generous education in the craft of nonfiction writing itself — how she finds ideas, researches a subject, discovers a theme, and crafts an irresistible opening line — making the memoir as much a celebration of the writing life as it is the story of her own.

Critical Acclaim

Joyride became a national bestseller and was named a Best Book of the Year by NPR, Time, Oprah Daily, Goodreads, and others. The Wall Street Journal called it "brilliant... a high-spirited, exhilarating memoir," and David Sedaris praised it as "wise and exuberant... funny, as well. Just masterful." Kirkus Reviews, in a starred review, called it a spry, entertaining memoir-slash-writing-workshop by a nonfiction artist at the top of her game, packed with an "MFA in nonfiction writing," while Publishers Weekly, also starred, wrote that "writers new and established will savor every word." Booklist, in a third starred review, called it "ebullient, frank, moving, and inspiring."
