About the Book

Land of Two Rivers: A History of Bengal from the Mahabharata to Mujib is a sweeping and widely admired history by Nitish Sengupta, chronicling the story of one of the most fascinating and influential regions in the Indian subcontinent across roughly 2,500 years. The confluence of two major river systems, the Ganga and the Brahmaputra, created the fertile delta of Bengal, an ancient land known as a center of trade, learning, and the arts since the days of the Mahabharata, and Sengupta traces its remarkable journey from those earliest recorded eras all the way to the birth of modern Bangladesh.

The book moves chronologically through the ancient dynasties, including the Palas and the Senas, before exploring the medieval rise of Muslim dynasties, including the Ilyas Shahi and the Golden Age under Alauddin Hussain Shah, which brought into being a culture quite distinct from that of northern India. From there, Sengupta examines the colonial conquest of the eighteenth century, which transformed Bengal's social and economic structure, and the subsequent flowering of the Bengal Renaissance and religious reform movements that shaped a distinct Bengali identity. The narrative continues through the growth of nationalist politics and the complex web of events that led to the region's partition along communal lines in 1947, and ultimately to the struggle of East Pakistan against economic exploitation and cultural oppression under West Pakistan, culminating in the emergence of independent Bangladesh in 1971 under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Readers have widely praised the book as an accessible, highly readable entry point into Bengali history, while some note that its comprehensive, fact-driven approach can feel dense in places, a natural trade-off for a work covering such an immense historical span in a single volume.
