About the Book
It's 1999, and best friends Sal and Charo are striving to hold onto their dreams in a New York determined to grind them down. Sal, a book-loving science nerd from Santo Domingo, is held back from moving forward by the tragic loss of his best friend and the weight of a painful, unspoken past. Charo, meanwhile, is a young mother caught between the traditional expectations she fled the Dominican Republic to escape and the new life she's trying to build for herself in the Bronx — one that increasingly pulls her away from her baby's father and toward her found queer community.
Told through interwoven timelines that move between 1999 New York and pivotal moments from Sal and Charo's shared childhood in Santo Domingo, the novel gradually reveals the layers of trauma, love, and loyalty that bind the two friends together. Grounded in the historical texture of its era — from Hurricane Floyd to the emerging awareness of HIV/AIDS — Loca traces how far a person must travel, geographically and emotionally, to become who they're meant to be, and what it costs to leave people and places behind in the process.
