About the Book

Women Around the Messenger is Muhammad Ali Qutb's illuminating biographical collection chronicling the lives of the remarkable women who surrounded and shaped the early years of Islam alongside the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. From the very beginning, women entering the fold of Islam played an enviable and prominent role side by side with their male counterparts in shaping and developing Muslim society, helping to emancipate humanity — both men and women — from the shackles of deep-rooted ignorance, and this book brings their stories vividly to life across generations of scholarship and tradition.

Organized around the Prophet's mothers, wives, daughters, and the wider circle of devoted female companions — beginning with Aminah bint Wahb, the Prophet's own mother, and including figures such as Khadijah, the first person to believe in his message and support him — Qutb traces each woman's individual contributions to the growing Islamic community, from intellectual and spiritual leadership to compassion, social welfare, and the preservation of the Qur'an itself. The book highlights instances of remarkable courage, wisdom, and devotion, showing how these early female believers seized meaningful roles in a society still emerging from ignorance, refuting persistent myths about women's status in Islam. Revised and annotated in its second edition with new explanatory footnotes and an added foreword from the translator, the book is intended to dispel misconceptions and re-center these women's biographies as enduring models for Muslim women today.
