About the Book

Snow has shut down Greg Heffley's middle school! It should be exciting, but instead his neighborhood transforms into a wintry battlefield. Rival groups fight over territory, build massive snow forts, and stage epic snowball fights — and caught right in the crosshairs are Greg and his trusty best friend, Rowley Jefferson. It's a fight for survival as Greg and Rowley navigate shifting alliances, unexpected betrayals, and warring gangs in a full-blown neighborhood meltdown.

Can Greg and Rowley figure out the art of war as their street descends into chaos, or will they be caught in the crossfire between the neighborhood's rival factions? Taking place soon after the events of The Getaway, the story trades tropical sunburns for icy standoffs, immersing Greg in a wintertime power struggle that tests both his strategic thinking and his friendship with Rowley. When the snow finally clears, will Greg and Rowley emerge as heroes — or will they even survive to see another day?

Critical and Reader Reception

The Meltdown sold several hundred thousand copies upon release and received positive reviews from critics, with Kinney promoting the book through a live tour. Readers have enjoyed the fresh wintertime premise, distinguishing it from the family's earlier tropical getaway and appreciating the neighborhood-wide "war" concept as a fun, high-energy twist on the series' usual middle school setting.
