About the Book
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, enriched by Jules Feiffer's splendid illustrations, follows Milo, a boy for whom everything is a bore. He has a room full of toys and books, yet nothing interests him — until a mysterious tollbooth appears in his bedroom one afternoon. Milo drives through it only because he has nothing better to do, but on the other side, everything is different. He finds himself in the Kingdom of Wisdom, and the adventure of a lifetime begins.
Milo's journey carries him through the Doldrums and into the Island of Conclusions, which, naturally, can only be reached by jumping. He passes through Dictionopolis and its dungeon, the Valley of Sound, the Forest of Sight, and Digitopolis's number mine, all while learning about the value of time from a ticking watchdog named Tock and picking up the loyal, blustering Humbug along the way. At the heart of it all lies a genuine quest: to rescue the exiled princesses Rhyme and Reason and restore order to a kingdom that has lost its way. Somewhere along the journey, Milo realizes something astonishing — life is far from dull; in fact, it is exciting beyond his wildest dreams. Through its wit, wordplay, and gentle wisdom, the book has enchanted readers for more than sixty years, with almost 5 million copies sold and enduring praise from writers like Philip Pullman, who noted that it "comes up bright and new every time" it's read.

About the Author: Norton Juster
Norton Juster (1929–2021) was an architect, planner, professor emeritus of design at Hampshire College, and one of the most beloved authors in children's literature. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he spent most of his adult life in Amherst, Massachusetts. After leaving the Navy, Juster began writing a non-fiction book about urban planning, but spent his free time developing the imaginative scenes that would eventually become The Phantom Tollbooth, ultimately abandoning the scholarly work to finish the novel instead. He also wrote The Dot and the Line, which was adapted into an Academy Award-winning animated film, and collaborated with composer Sheldon Harnick on an opera libretto based on The Phantom Tollbooth.
