About the Book

A primary objective in a first course in mechanics is to help develop a student's ability first to analyze problems in a simple and logical manner, and then to apply basic principles to their solutions. A strong conceptual understanding of these fundamental mechanics principles is essential for successfully solving dynamics problems, and this edition of Vector Mechanics for Engineers: Dynamics is built to help instructors and students achieve exactly that.

For more than forty years, Beer and Johnston have been the uncontested leaders in the teaching of undergraduate engineering mechanics, introducing significant theoretical and pedagogical innovations in statics, dynamics, and mechanics of materials education. Continuing that tradition, this edition provides conceptually accurate and thorough coverage of dynamics, together with a significant refreshment of the exercise sets — over 650 homework problems are new or revised — plus new case studies and enhancements integrated with McGraw-Hill's Connect online learning platform for streamlined homework delivery. The hallmark of the Beer-Johnston series has always been its problem sets, and this edition continues that legacy with careful presentation of content, unmatched levels of accuracy, and close attention to detail.

Why Choose This Book?

  • The industry-standard dynamics textbook: Beer and Johnston's texts have set the standard for excellence in engineering mechanics education for over forty years.
  • Rigorously updated problem sets: Over 650 new or revised homework problems in this edition alone.
  • Enhanced digital integration: Pairs with McGraw-Hill's Connect platform for online homework delivery and additional learning resources.
  • From a legendary author team: Written and refined by respected engineering educators with decades of combined teaching experience at MIT, Lehigh University, the University of Connecticut, and beyond.
  • Comprehensive conceptual coverage: Emphasizes building genuine understanding of mechanics principles, not just procedural problem-solving.

About the Authors

Ferdinand P. Beer, born in France and educated in France and Switzerland, held an M.S. degree from the Sorbonne and an Sc.D. in theoretical mechanics from the University of Geneva; he taught for thirty-seven years at Lehigh University, where he held the University Distinguished Professor's Chair. E. Russell Johnston Jr. held a B.S. in civil engineering from the University of Delaware and an Sc.D. in structural engineering from MIT, teaching for twenty-six years at the University of Connecticut, where he chaired the Civil Engineering Department. The text is continued by Phillip J. Cornwell and Brian P. Self, both active leaders in engineering education, with Self having developed the widely used Dynamics Concept Inventory to assess student understanding.
