About the Book

Vector Mechanics for Engineers: Statics, together with its companion volume Vector Mechanics for Engineers: Dynamics, is designed to develop in first-year engineering students the ability to analyze any problem in a simple and logical manner, and to apply basic engineering principles to its solution. Each chapter begins with an introduction and a set of learning objectives, and ends with a chapter review and summary. The body of the text is divided into units, each consisting of one or several theory sections, sample problems, and a large number of problems assigned during class or as homework — with sample problems serving the double purpose of amplifying the text and demonstrating the type of neat, orderly work students should cultivate in their own solutions.

For the past forty years, Beer and Johnston have been the uncontested leaders in the teaching of undergraduate engineering mechanics, introducing significant theoretical and pedagogical innovations in statics, dynamics, and mechanics of materials education. The text covers the full arc of statics — from statics of particles, equivalent systems of forces, and equilibrium of rigid bodies, through distributed forces, analysis of structures, friction, moments of inertia, and the method of virtual work — offering a unified presentation of the principles of statics paired with a systematic problem-solving approach. This edition is further enhanced with digital resources available through McGraw-Hill's Connect platform, and includes appendix material correlated to the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination.

Why Choose This Book?

  • The industry-standard statics textbook: Beer and Johnston's texts have set the standard for excellence in engineering mechanics education for over forty years.
  • Systematic, unified problem-solving approach: Builds strong conceptual understanding alongside procedural mastery.
  • Comprehensive statics coverage: Spans particles, rigid bodies, structures, friction, centroids, and moments of inertia.
  • Enhanced digital integration: Pairs with McGraw-Hill's Connect platform for online homework delivery and additional resources.
  • FE Exam correlated: Includes an appendix aligning content directly with the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination.

About the Authors

Ferdinand P. Beer, born in France and educated in France and Switzerland, held an M.S. degree from the Sorbonne and an Sc.D. in theoretical mechanics from the University of Geneva; he taught for thirty-seven years at Lehigh University, where he held the University Distinguished Professor's Chair and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree in 1995. E. Russell Johnston Jr. held a B.S. in civil engineering from the University of Delaware and an Sc.D. in structural engineering from MIT, teaching for twenty-six years at the University of Connecticut, where he chaired the Civil Engineering Department. David F. Mazurek continues the text's legacy as a co-author on more recent editions.

Who Should Read This Book?

  • Undergraduate engineering students taking a first course in statics
  • Mechanical, civil, and aerospace engineering students
  • Instructors teaching engineering mechanics courses
  • Students preparing for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination
  • Engineering professionals seeking a trusted statics reference
