About the Book

The Vegetarian follows Yeong-hye, an ordinary South Korean woman whose life is upended after a series of disturbing dreams leads her to make one quiet but radical decision: she will no longer eat meat. As her husband, brother-in-law, and sister each try to reassert control over her, Yeong-hye obsessively defends the choice that has become sacred to her. Their attempts turn increasingly desperate, subjecting first her mind and then her body to ever more intrusive and perverse violations, sending her spiraling into a dangerous, bizarre estrangement — not only from those closest to her, but from herself.

Structured in three parts, each narrated by a different member of her family, the novel traces Yeong-hye's transformation from dutiful wife to a woman seeking a more "plant-like" existence, entirely outside the reach of the people around her. Darkly allegorical and Kafka-esque, The Vegetarian is a haunting meditation on power, obsession, shame, and desire, and one woman's struggle to break free from the violence both without and within her.

Critical Acclaim

The Vegetarian won the Man Booker International Prize in 2016 — the first time the prize was awarded to a single work of fiction — and was named a Best Book of the Year by BuzzFeed, Entertainment Weekly, The Wall Street Journal, Time, Elle, The Economist, HuffPost, Slate, and Publishers Weekly, among others. The New York Times described it as a surreal, mesmerizing mix of sex and violence, while The Guardian called it a feast of dark dreams, simmering tensions, and chilling violence, praising its sentence-by-sentence intensity as an extraordinary reading experience.
