About the Book
When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi tells the story of a man on the verge of completing a decade of training as a neurosurgeon, only to be diagnosed at thirty-six with inoperable lung cancer. One day he was a doctor; the next, he was a patient struggling to live. In this book, written in the time he had left, Kalanithi offers an unforgettable, life-affirming reflection on facing death and on the relationship between doctor and patient, from a brilliant writer who became both.
The memoir traces Kalanithi's path from a childhood in Kingman, Arizona, through his studies in literature and human biology at Stanford, graduate work at Cambridge, and medical school at Yale, before his grueling neurosurgical residency at Stanford, where he developed a deep appreciation for the intricate relationship between the brain and human identity. When his diagnosis arrives, the questions that had shaped his career — of life, death, and meaning — become urgently personal. What do you do when the future, no longer a ladder toward your goals, flattens into a perpetual present? What does it mean to have a child, to nurture a new life as another fades away? Kalanithi wrestles with these questions in prose that is, as reviewers have noted, unsentimental yet devastating, carrying the gravity and wisdom of an ancient Greek tragedy while remaining deeply human and relatable throughout. Paul Kalanithi died in March 2015 while still working on this book, yet his words remain as a guide and a gift to readers navigating their own questions about mortality and what it means to be fully alive.
